  • Who can enter?

    The Competition is open to all entrants aged 18 or over, and is void where prohibited by local law.

  • What type of work is eligible?

    All photo-based work is eligible, be it film, digital, tintype, camera-less, etc.

  • I am new to photography, Do I have a chance?

    Absolutely! We welcome all photographers. From professionals, semi-professionals, amateurs to total beginners. We are interested in all kinds of photography and we believe everyone has a chance.

  • How many photos may I submit?

    Up to 8 photos per submission.

  • How many times can I submit?

    There is no limit and you can submit as many times as you like. We suggest, however, that you edit your photos wisely, and send us only your best.

  • Do I have to provide other information?

    Images must be titled. Description is optional although recommended, we want to know about your work! Please note that the word count for the description or statement cannot exceed 250 words.

  • I'm having a problem uploading my images.

    Please make sure that each image is in JPG or PNG format, and less than 6 MB.
    Minimum resolution of 1500px and lower than 10.000 pixels (height or width).

  • Is there a fee to enter?

    Yes, there is a $15/$30/$45 fee to enter up to 8 images, unless there is an exceptional promotional offer (like in February 2020), when photographers are able to submit 1 photo for free.

  • What forms of payment do you accept?

    All users can pay with Paypal or Credit Card (Visa, MasterCard, etc). Additionally U.S. users can pay with JCB, Discover, and Diners Club.

  • Do I retain the copyright on my images?

    Yes. You retain full copyright to all your images. Entries may be posted online and winning images may be used in connection with the Competition and promotion of the Competition.

  • How old can my images be?

    There is not really a time limit. The image can be relatively old and still make it to the finalists / winners. However, please keep in mind that we are trying to promote new content and bring exposure to emerging, talented photographers.

  • How does the judging process work?

    Each month, a Judge is appointed by The Independent Photographer and the selection process is done anonymously to ensure that each contestant is judged fairly and only based on his or her photograph.

  • When will the winners be announced?

    Winners and Finalists will be announced during the first half of the month following the competition.

  • If I win, how will I receive the prize money?

    The prize money is sent by transfer via PayPal. For security and reliability reason we use PayPal, but we can also proceed via Bank/Wire transfer.

  • When and where is the exhibition of the winning work?

    Winners and finalists will see their work exhibited at our annual exhibitions at the renowned CBL-Berlin Gallery in Berlin, Germany as part of the European Month of Photography (EMOP) and at Office Project Room in Milan, Italy where the event will be held in collaboration with our friends and partners PHROOM. All details regarding the event are to be shared closer to date, and more details can be found on our Competition page.

  • How will the work be printed and displayed?

    The Independent Photographer will be responsible for all costs related to printing, installing and overall display of the work at the venues.
